What Is Hypnotherapy? What to Expect at Your First Ottawa Session

By Estela Sasson · October 14, 2026 · 2 min read

A calm, plain-language guide to what hypnotherapy really is, how a first session unfolds, and how to prepare.

Hypnosis, without the stage show

When most people hear the word hypnosis, they picture a swinging pocket watch or a volunteer clucking like a chicken on stage. Clinical hypnotherapy is nothing like that. It is a collaborative, focused state of relaxation, similar to the moment just before you fall asleep, or the absorbed feeling of being lost in a good book.

In that state, the critical, analytical part of the mind quiets down. That gives us access to the subconscious: the part of you that runs habits, emotional reactions and long-held beliefs. It's where much of the change people seek actually needs to happen.

Why the subconscious matters

You can know, logically, that a fear is irrational or that a habit is hurting you, and still feel powerless to change it. That's because knowledge lives in the conscious mind, while the response lives deeper. Hypnotherapy works at that deeper level, helping you reframe past events and resolve emotional issues at their core rather than managing symptoms on the surface.

This is why many clients notice meaningful shifts after a single session, even with issues they've carried for years.

What happens in your first session

Your first session begins with conversation. We'll talk about what brought you here, what you'd like to change and any questions or worries you have about hypnosis. There's no rush, this part matters, because it shapes everything that follows.

Next, I'll guide you into a relaxed state using a gentle spoken induction. You'll sit or recline comfortably. You remain aware the entire time, can hear my voice and can speak, move or open your eyes whenever you like. You cannot be made to do anything against your will.

During the hypnosis portion, we work directly on your goal, revisiting the roots of a pattern, rehearsing new responses or simply allowing deep calm. Afterward, we talk through your experience together.

Your session recording

Every hypnosis session is recorded and emailed to you afterward. Many clients find that listening again over the following weeks deepens and reinforces the change. It's yours to keep and revisit whenever you need it.

How to prepare

Wear comfortable clothes, eat lightly beforehand and avoid alcohol on the day. Bring an open, curious mind, you don't need to 'believe' in hypnosis for it to work, and there is no way to do it wrong. If you'd like to talk through whether hypnotherapy is a good fit for you, a short consultation is the best first step.
